Once Upon a Time Season 2 Hiatus: Why Are There No New Episodes?

Once Upon a Time Season 2, Episode 19: Snow, Charming, Nealfire, and Emma It seems like forever since we’ve had a new episode of Once Upon A Time (in reality, it has only been two and a half weeks). Why the unbearable mid-season hiatus? OUAT co-creator Adam Horowitz took to Twitter to explain the whole thing.
“[We] need time to film and edit the episodes. We wish we could be on every week. Just not physically possible. Thnx for patience!” Adam tweeted yesterday at an anxious fan. Basically, the episodes don’t write, film, and edit themselves magically. (Or do they...?)

The show will return with a new episode (Season 2, Episode 19: “Lacey”) on April 21, and we will have new episodes every Sunday until the Season 3 finale on May 5. Sadly, there are only four episodes left in the season, which is perhaps another reason for the hiatus: to ensure the show airs its finale in May, as is traditional with network series.

In addition to “Lacey,” we have Season 2, Episode 20: “The Evil Queen,” and the two-part finale: “Second Star on the Right” and “And Straight On ‘Til Morning.” The latter of those will air on May 12, marking the beginning of a summer-long hiatus.

The show hasn’t officially been picked up for a third season, but we think it is a pretty sure thing. Despite a recent drop in ratings, OUAT is still a winner for ABC and has been given a potential spin-off centered on Wonderland. Still, we can’t help but wonder if poor scheduling has contributed to the decline in viewership.

Has this mid-season hiatus seemed unbearable? Do you think it hurt the show? Let us know in the comments below!

Catch the next episode of Once Upon a Time on Sunday, April 21 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.

  1. Over everything else that could go wrong with a show I think the reason for drop in views is because of these hiatus. I know that the process of writing and filming and editing takes time and I LOVE that they aren't like most shows that film their episodes months ahead of time. I think the hiatus is worth it... and besides of you miss OUAT so much just watch reruns and catch up on things that you might have missed earlier!
